The July 8th, 2004 meeting of the Champaign-Urbana Astronomical Society was called to order at 7pm by President Jeff Byrant in the Staerkel Planetarium. 18 people attended the meeting. Club business discussed was: A suggested schedule was passed around for club activity for children. The Junior Stargazers will start meeting at 6-7pm before the regular club meeting. Jeff Byrant said he could be there to answer astronomy questions. Bob Lozar and Mike Conron also expressed interest in helping Claudia Paris with the Junior Stargazers. The next observing session at Allerton Park on Monticello will be August 7th. If you haven't been there before, meet up with other CUAS folks at Hobby Lobby, as getting to the observing site requires driving on a blacktop path by the old Gatehouse. Remember that a bridge is out, so access to Allerton Park is limited. Taking I-72 eastwards, you take the 2nd Monticello exit (Bridge Street), take a left over the bridge, and the take a right on the frontage road right after crossing the bridge, take a left near a small dark green sign, and pass through a rural subdivision to enter the park. www.allerton.uiuc.edu/images/Visitor_park_map.pdf We plan to invite the public to our dome for the meteor shower on August 11th. 2005 calendars were to be ordered. We may have a DVD on cosmology for the September meeting if our arrangements work as planned. We agreed to no longer be members en masse of the Astronomical League, as the dues were increasing to $5 per club membership. (You can still be a member at large, at your own cost, if you wish http://www.astroleague.org ) Mike Rosenberger is looking for a new home for his 20+ year collection of Sky and Telescope magazines. Bob Lozar talked about dark sky sites, and had the members present at the meeting cast votes for what each member present would consider our dark sky site. Then, our president presented a program of images from the recent Cassini mission. We got to see an image of each of Saturn's moons. The Meeting was adjourned at about 8:45PM.
